No marketing bullshit

Andy Kessler - 15-Jun-2018
When we started open we said we will never do something because of marketing reasons. We simply build the bikes we love to ride ourselves. We try to set a standard rather than copying one.

Now, for our OPEN- ENVE Limited Edition we made an exception and hired one of the most famous marketing agencies to find out what the most desirable number is. We spend quite a bit of money and time on that project with several meetings and analyzing customer data. The result was a number that 95% of consumers would prefer. No, its not 1/30 or 30/30 we would have thought that also.

Its 3/30.

Because the verdict was so clear, we thought we cannot let 95% of our customers down with a number like 13/30 or even worse 4/30 (four is in Asia a very unlucky number).

That’s why we decided to number all of the limited editions with 3/30! Like that we make 95% of our customers happy.

Ok, ok I know we are bad in making UP stories…This is fake news!

In fact, this whole OPEN-ENVE edition did take way more time, nerves and tears than I thought. It showed once more that the bike business would be so great if you do not have to deal with suppliers. I don’t want to mention any details because another thing we try to do here is to treat everybody we work with in a fair way but Sebastian who shares the office with me heard me shouting out loud a couple of times lately…

So, yes it’s unfortunately reality:  instead of numbering the frames from 1/30 to 30/30 our painter took for all the lucky number 3/30.  I am extremely sorry for that, it’s a typical example of something getting “lost in translation”.  It ruined my day (I had a couple of them before) and I hope it does not ruin yours.

I thought that we should do a T-shirt for all of you OPEN-ENVE owners.

In the front it says: I am the lucky one

In the back it says:  3/30

Let me know if you want one like that it would be at least something to show that we care.

....we should have called this edition the F…-UP

The problem is that in the bike biz you have at least 10-15 April 1st a year where you think you get fooled....

One of them would have been 3/30 ... The rest are even more collectable errors, like coins and stamps, no?

Thank you for being Epic, just another example of why you guys are above and beyond the rest. I think this falls under the “ shit happens” Catagory. I’m proud every time I jump in the saddle of one of my OPEN bicycles, not just because they are great bicycles, but even more so, to be part of the OPEN tribe which represents such a great company. Cheers to you guys??

This post made my day. I love it. Thanks for the good laugh - even if it was a source of frustration. I second what many others have said - I'd love to buy that tshirt (or kit, or hat, or whatever) even tho I'm a One+ owner. So much of what I love about my Open is its story - how I got it, how I built it, the painstaking process of selecting components, the ethos of the brand, the story behind you guys - it's fun to talk about. This would just be another piece of that community/lore/inside joke we're all in on as part of the Open community. Again, thanks for sharing!

What a great story! This is what draws me into the Open family. For a few years I have followed the dialog, appreciated the detailed design discussion, researched alternatives, and after finally deciding dreamed of eventually owning a Open. Now I’m anxiously awaiting my Enve Edition. Love the 3/30 T-shirt or kit idea. Thanks for the journey.

Guys I don't care about numbers, I am more curious about your production: is there any different in your frames or are they manufactured in China, as the other brands? To me, this is more important...
