Annual surprise month

Gerard Vroomen - 13-Feb-2020
This is a strange type of blog post I am about to write. It seems to be recurring annually, and yet it is the sort of topic that you can't expect to happen annually. I'm talking about the Bike of the Year awards from various publications.

Of course we introduced a new bike this year, so that increases the odds of winning an award. But there are hundreds of brands producing thousands of bikes, so that diminishes the odds.

We also know there are more than a few publications that base their awards on how much brands spend on advertising. So given that we don't advertise AT ALL, that means we're fishing in a smaller pond with just the magazines that have strict separation between editorial and advertising. And there are still these hundreds of other fishing rods (and some huge trawlers) in the same pond.

All of this is to say that we weren't expecting any "congratulations, you've won" emails this year. But then the email came anyway. And then another. And another. And another!

This is the point where I am expected to write that for us, the most important feedback is what our customers think of our bikes. And that is true, but I see the journalists riding our bikes as a sort of customer too. They all love riding just like you and I, and they ride so much that what they write may be ignored only at our peril.

Most of the accolades came for the WI.DE., not surprising since it is new this year. It's satisfying to see that in a year where everybody and their donkey introduced a gravel bike, the WI.DE. made an impact on journalists and editors who may have become quite blasé by the end of the year.

Even more satisfying is that they seem to recognize the main premise of the WI.DE: wider tires widens where you can ride, and with the right geometry you can do this in a way that doesn't reduce the on-road fun you can have with the bike. Here are articles:

1) RoadBikeAction Editor's Choice for Gravel.

2) Design & Innovation Award.

3) off-road.cc voted the Wide the "Benchmark Bike of the Year" while its sister publication road.cc made it a Frameset of the Year finalist (not bad when a gravel bike becomes a finalist for an ON-road magazine).

4) Bikerumor.com Editor's choice award for Gravel.

5) And that was not all, after a very long-term test by Feed The Habit (a relatively small but really nice website on all things outdoors), they awarded Gear of the Year to the U.P.P.E.R. plus a very nice review.

Of course it's nice to get some recognition (who doesn't like that) although right now I would trade all these awards for a production-ready De-fender set. We're close, but not there yet.

Not surprising since it`s impressingly good! And different! And better! Congrats from a very satisfied WI.DE owner ;-))

Very well deserved. You truly have some something special with not just the wide (I ride 700x45 AND 650x2.1! on my own UPPER WIDE!) but with all of your frame sets. My 27.5 One Plus is still my favorite mountain bike! Keep up the happiness as it seems great work follows!

Well done. You have worked so hard to create some very original and special bikes. Today I spent the Valentines morning cycling down from north Norfolk to Sandringham (one of QE2's palaces) and back for lunch with my wife of 31 Valentines days. A good day to say I am in L.O.V.E. - with my OPEN U.P. Thank you.

That all depends, every 42mm tire is difference. It's not the width, but the height of the tire (and thus the wheel diameter that is the limiting factor here. Some 42mm tires fit, many don't, that's why we list 40mm. But even then, you have to measure. On the WIDE it would fit easily.

I have. But tbh, clearance from the seat tube is very tight. The clearance from the chain stays is fine. If it’s not a muddy day, you should be fine. Otherwise be prepared to touch up the paint because it will get chewed up. Now, I used the wtb nano. They are known to be “taller” than other 42s. I currently run Rene herse Barlow 700x38.... perfect for almost any conditions except for the super knarly stuff. Just my experience.

Yes, the Nano 40c is a very tall tire, most 40mm tires are much lower.

Greetings
I purchased an OPEN UP from Bauerhaus bikes in Boise Idaho earlier this week. I’m trying to get it registered on your website but I was unable to locate a serial number on the frame. I checked underneath the bottom bracket but there is no serial number. Thanks for your help.

Hi BP, was it an RTP frame (in which case there may not be a serial number visible after painting)? Just send me a photo of the bottom of the bottom bracket at gerard@opencycle.com and we'll figure it out.

What is the narrowest 700c tyre you could comfortably and effectively run on an Open Wi.de? Would 700/28 work or 700/32 (I.e the GP5000s TL) or is the minimum really a 700/35 (I.e the Pirelli Cinturato Velo)? Looking to use a wide to commute, fast gravel and an XC replacement with 3 wheel sets
